My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic themed baby blanket

Okay, so it may not be 100% themed, but it's at least 20% cooler than any other project I had done... with maybe the exception of the free-hand saddlebag backpack (that'll be another post).

However, I at least want to share with you about this particular project.

This pattern utilizes Super Value's Harvest Colors for a rich and beautiful yet easy granny square blanket. Approx 46 x 52
(Photo from Bernat's website of the pattern in question)
I found this little project on Bernat's website - called the Super Value Granny Afghan that utilizes 7 colors and 2 different granny squares.

(Here's an up close shot of the two types of squares - what I called the checkerboard and the X pattern.)

For this one, I knew I wanted to make a pony themed blanket... and I wanted it to finally be something for me... Well... things don't always turn out the way we want them to, now do they?

NOPE!  Their suggestion - use a J hook... so I went out and bought one. (Love it! Boye's Crochet Dude line doesn't make my hands/wrists hurt after a while.)  I used the hook, I made the squares according to the pattern - which was only 4 rounds per each square... It didn't say "continue pattern until gauge is reached" which was 6"x6"... which I didn't find out until AFTER I finished the original project!!!  That's what I get for not reading the instructions entirely beforehand, I suppose. XD  The squares only turned out to be MAYBE 1/3 of the intended size... so maybe 2"x2".

Well, I knew I needed 7 colors... well, there's the "Mane 6" - but who would stand in for the 7th?  Spike isn't exactly a pony, and for a moment I considered using a spring green to denote for Spike... but a different pony popped into my mind and made the final cut. :)

Here's a photo of the finished blanket:

Ta-Da!!  Bottom row, left to right: Applejack (Gold), Pinkie Pie (Magenta), Derpy (Silver Blue), Rarity (Dark Lilac), Fluttershy (Pale Yellow), Rainbow Dash (Turquoise), and Twilight Sparkle (Light Lilac)... and for 20% more Dashie - I used Red Heart's "Fruit Punch" for the rainbow colored border. :)

What I have here is a very colorful baby blanket.... and Zaidiebug with no wee ones of her own.

More projects on the way. :)
